Swim Vietnam is a registered UK charity. Charity number SC042133.
Our mission is to reduce the incidence of drowning in Vietnam by providing high quality swim coaching to Vietnamese children. To teach them basic water safety techniques that could help save their lives and to promote general water safety issues in Vietnam. To give local people the required skills to teach swimming and water safety. In addition we aim to promote swimming as a sport in Vietnam with the long term goal of improving health and fitness across the country.
The swimming program was started in 2008 by MetaSport, a Singapore based sports management company. MetaSport is the organiser of the Vietnam International Triathlon held annually in Hoi An. This is a high profile event which attracts athletes from around the world. For more information see www.vietnamtriathlon.com
While organising the triathlon MetaSport realised that local children could not compete in a swimming race because very few of the children knew how to swim. It was then discovered the shockingly high rates of drowning in Vietnam. Many of these lives could be saved if children were taught how to swim. The MetaSport Children’s Swimming Program was established in Hoi An to help tackle this program.
The program developed and expanded. It has now successfully taught over 1500 to swim. It became a registered UK charity in 2011 and is now called Swim Vietnam
